The forerunner of the Discipline of Public Health Medicine, in the School of Nursing and Public Health at the Nelson R Mandela School of Medicine was the Institute of Family and Community Health. Dr Sydney Kark and his team initiated this Institute in 1946. Public health training was offered to a wide range of professionals from doctors to community workers.

The Department of Public Health Medicine is part of the School of Nursing and Public Health, College of Health Sciences, University of KwaZulu Natal. The Department provides undergraduate and postgraduate students a population based perspective on health, healing and society. It draws on policy, management and measurement sciences and is closely linked to health systems and health services.
Applications for the PhD Public Health programme are considered twice a year.
Candidates are eligible to apply for selection to register provided that they hold:
Candidates must be registered with the Health Professional Council of South Africa as Independent Medical Practitioners and have a minimum of two years of experience in an appropriate health service post.
Eligibility Criteria: A 3 year Bachelor’s degree in a health or related social science discipline and completion of a 1 year program or at least a minimum of 1 year relevant clinical experience in the health or social sector (post community service).
